A smartwatch is one of the most popular holiday gifts, and one of the easiest to get wrong. The biggest mistake isn’t picking the “wrong” brand. It’s buying a watch that doesn’t work with the phone you (or the person you’re shopping for) already own. We compared current, top-rated smartwatches on Amazon by verified ratings, real owner reviews, battery life and price to find five worth buying, plus one kind you should avoid.
Step 1: Which Phone Do You Have?
- iPhone: Apple Watch gives you the best experience. Garmin and Amazfit also work well.
- Samsung or other Android phone: Samsung Galaxy Watch is the top choice. Garmin and Amazfit also work. Apple Watches do not work with Android phones at all.
- Buying a gift and not sure? Garmin and Amazfit work with both, so they’re the safe choice.

Our 5 Picks
Several of these are often cheaper from new-condition sellers on eBay. Where that’s the case, we’ve added a “Compare New on eBay” button. Check the seller’s rating and whether the manufacturer’s warranty applies before you buy there.

#3 · Best for Android
Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 (40mm)

- Detailed sleep tracking

- Does not work with iPhone
- Plan on charging every 1 to 2 days

#5 · Best Under $150
Amazfit Active 2 (Sapphire Glass)

- Multi-day battery
- Scratch-resistant sapphire glass
Cons:
- Smaller app selection

One to Skip: “Smartwatches” That Claim to Measure Blood Sugar
You’ll see cheap, no-name smartwatches (often $20 to $60) advertising that they can measure blood glucose without a finger-prick. Don’t buy them, and never use one to make health decisions. In February 2024 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned consumers not to use smartwatches or smart rings that claim to measure blood sugar without piercing the skin, because it has not authorized any such device and inaccurate readings could lead to dangerous dosing mistakes. Be equally wary of bargain watches promising medical-grade blood pressure readings.
What Actually Matters When Choosing
- Phone compatibility: the deal-breaker. See Step 1.
- Battery life: Apple and Samsung need charging every day or two. Garmin and Amazfit can last a week or more.
- Size: smaller cases (40–42mm) suit smaller wrists and most gift situations; larger cases have bigger screens and batteries.
- GPS vs. cellular (LTE): GPS models use your phone for calls and texts. Cellular models work without your phone nearby but cost more upfront and usually need a monthly phone-plan add-on.
- Fitness goals: casual step and sleep tracking? Any pick works. Serious running or training? Garmin.

FAQ
Can I use an Apple Watch with an Android phone?
No. Apple Watch requires an iPhone to set up and use.
Can I use a Samsung Galaxy Watch with an iPhone?
Current Galaxy Watch models are designed for Android phones and don’t support iPhone. iPhone owners should choose Apple, Garmin or Amazfit.
Are smartwatch health readings accurate?
Heart rate, steps and sleep tracking from major brands are good for spotting trends, but they aren’t medical devices. Talk to a doctor about any readings that worry you.
When is the best time to buy?
Smartwatches are regularly discounted around Amazon’s October sale event, Black Friday and Cyber Monday. If you’re not in a hurry, those are good times to check prices.
The Bottom Line
Start with the phone. iPhone owners: the Apple Watch Series 11 is the best overall, and the SE 3 is the best value. Android owners: the Samsung Galaxy Watch 8. Want a week of battery or work with any phone? The Garmin vívoactive 6, or the Amazfit Active 2 if you want to spend under $150. And skip any watch promising needle-free blood sugar readings.
