#1 · Best Overall
Apple iPad 11-inch (A16 chip, 128GB)

4.7★ (28,991 ratings) on Amazon · iPadOS
The easiest tablet to recommend. It’s fast, simple to use, gets years of software updates and has the best selection of tablet apps. The 128GB base storage is plenty for most people. Price varies by color, so check all colors before you buy.
Pros:
- Top-rated tablet on Amazon by a wide margin
- Years of software updates
- Huge app selection; works great with iPhone
Cons:
- Price varies a lot by color
- Keyboard and Apple Pencil cost extra
#2 · Best Android
Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE (128GB)

4.7★ (1,074 ratings) on Amazon · Android
Samsung’s best-value premium tablet, with a large, sharp screen and the S Pen stylus included in the box for note-taking and drawing. A great pick for Samsung phone owners.
Pros:
- S Pen stylus included
- Large, sharp display
- Works smoothly with Samsung phones
Cons:
- Costs more than the iPad
- Keyboard sold separately
#3 · Best Value Android
Samsung Galaxy Tab A11+ (6GB, 128GB)

4.6★ (2,523 ratings) on Amazon · Android
A solid everyday Android tablet for streaming, reading, video calls and web browsing, with 128GB of storage and a memory card slot to add more.
Pros:
- Great rating for the price
- 128GB plus expandable storage
- Full Google Play app store
Cons:
- Not as fast as the S10 FE or iPad
- No stylus included
#4 · Best Under $100
Amazon Fire HD 10 (32GB)

4.5★ (44,461 ratings) on Amazon · Fire OS
Hard to beat for reading, streaming, recipes and video calls at this price, with a Full HD 10-inch screen. Two things to know: it shows ads on the lock screen unless you pay to remove them, and it uses Amazon’s app store, not Google Play, so some apps aren’t available.
Pros:
- Unbeatable price for a 10-inch Full HD screen
- Over 44,000 ratings
- Great for Prime Video, Kindle books and Alexa
Cons:
- Lock-screen ads unless you pay to remove them
- Amazon app store only: no Google Play
#5 · Best for Kids
Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids (Ages 3–7)

4.5★ (8,770 ratings) on Amazon · Fire OS (Kids)
Built for young kids, with a sturdy kid-proof case, strong parental controls and included ad-free kids’ content. Amazon backs its Kids tablets with a worry-free replacement guarantee; see the listing for current terms.
Pros:
- Kid-proof case included
- Strong parental controls
- Ad-free kids’ content included
Cons:
- Designed for ages 3–7; older kids outgrow it
- Amazon app store only
One to Skip: No-Name Tablets with “Virtual RAM” Claims
Search for “tablet” and you’ll see no-name 10-inch Android tablets for $60 to $120 promising “16GB RAM” in big letters, with “(8GB + 8GB virtual)” in small print. “Virtual RAM” is just storage pretending to be memory, so the real memory is half what the box brags about. These tablets tend to be slow, often use older versions of Android and rarely get security updates. For the same money, the Amazon Fire HD 10 is the better buy.
What to Look For
- Storage: 64GB minimum; 128GB if you’ll download movies or games. A memory card slot is a bonus.
- Screen: 10 to 11 inches suits most people. Look for Full HD or better.
- Software updates: Apple and Samsung support their tablets for years. Cheap no-name brands usually don’t.
- App store: iPads use Apple’s App Store, Samsung uses Google Play, and Fire tablets use Amazon’s own store with fewer apps.
Tablet or Laptop?
For email, streaming, reading and video calls, a tablet is lighter, simpler and lasts longer on a charge. If you need to type a lot or run full programs like Microsoft Office, a laptop is the better tool. See our Best Laptops Under $700.

FAQ
Which tablet is best for seniors?
The iPad is the easiest to learn and has the largest selection of simple apps. For reading and video calls on a budget, the Fire HD 10’s large screen works well; you can increase text size in settings on either.
Can I remove the ads on a Fire tablet?
Yes, Amazon offers a paid option to remove the lock-screen ads. Check the current price on the listing.
Do I need the cellular (LTE) version?
Most people don’t. Wi-Fi tablets are cheaper, and you can use your phone’s hotspot when you’re out.
The Bottom Line
For most people, the iPad (A16) is the best tablet. Samsung users should get the Galaxy Tab S10 FE, or the Galaxy Tab A11+ to spend less. For reading and streaming under $100, the Fire HD 10, and for young kids, the Fire HD 10 Kids. Skip no-name tablets that inflate their memory with “virtual RAM.”
